Dr.
Jeanne Best, DVM recently participated in the
world's premier continuing education meeting
for equine veterinarians. The American Association
of Equine Practitioners' (AAEP) 52nd Annual
Convention held in San Antonio, Texas, December
2-6 offered the latest advances in equine health
care.
Scientific
sessions, practice management seminars and hands-on
workshops on topics ranging from lameness to
reproduction were attended by
an international gathering of over 2500 veterinary
professionals. Many of the sessions focused
on providing new equine health care techniques
that can be applied immediately to a veterinarians
daily practice.
The
American Association of Equine Practitioners,
headquartered in Lexington, KY was founded
in 1954 as a non-profit organization dedicated
to the health and welfare of the horse.
Currently
the AAEP reaches more than 5 million horse owners
through its over 9000 members worldwide and is
actively involved in ethics issues, practice
management, research and continuing education
in the equine veterinary profession and horse
industry.

Equine
Herpes Virus – type 1 (EHV1) Outbreak in
Florida
Several
cases of EHV1 have been reported in Florida, and
other states have reported isolated cases. The index
case for this outbreak was a horse imported from
Europe that passed through the USDA Import Center
in Newburg, NY in late November. Horses in contact
with the index case have been identified through
trace-backs and state veterinarians and owners have
been notified.
There
have been no reported cases in New York State associated
with this outbreak.
For
more information about the situation in Florida,
visit the Florida
Association of Equine Practioners web site.
As
biosecurity continues to be important in minimizing
the risk of disease outbreaks of any contagious organism,
you may want to review what you do at your facility
to keep your horses safe. If you need to find out
more, please contact Dr. Best and check out www.aaep.org for
information on controlling infectious diseases.

My
best friend from vet school has recently
landed in Iraq . After 20 years as
a reservist, she has been called
to serve in the war.
Sandy
was my support system in school,
and we joined the reserves together-she
made a career out of it.
She
is a fantastic lady and I wanted
to share this Web site with you,
my friends, in case you have ever
felt like you should send a note
to a soldier but, like me, didn't
know who, what, when, where, etc.

Please
be advised that a case of rabies in a horse
was diagnosed in Niagara County in August,
2006. This was the first case
of equine rabies in the county in eight
years. The affected horse was not vaccinated
and was humanely euthanized after showing
illness for about 4 days. Diagnosis was
made after the brain was submitted to the
state for testing.
There
is NO CURE and NO TREATMENT for rabies -
it is fatal - whether a horse, dog, cat
or person (any mammal is susceptible). Please
keep your pet's vaccination up to date.
I
will be asking for proof of rabies vaccination
from owners of horses that have not had
me do their vaccinations but for whom I
do dentistry. Sorry for the inconvenience,
but the other possible scenarios are much
worse - just ask any of those who had to
go through multiple vaccinations after
the exposure. The cost for prophylactic
treatment was close to $2,000. for just
the first round-Yes, insurance and the
county pick that up but I was shocked at
the hospital bill! Don't let it happen
to you or your loved ones!
