Why a horse needs a Coggins test to go to a horse show
The Coggins test was developed over 25 years ago by Dr. Leroy Coggins.
It is a blood test to see if a horse is infected with the Equine
Infectious Anemia virus or EIA. EIA affects the horse's immune system
and makes him more susceptible to other diseases as well as causing
damage to organs like the liver.
EIA is transmitted by blood-sucking
insects or using a contaminated needle or instrument. There is no
cure for this disease which is eventually fatal. Because of this,
the disease is controlled by having horses tested periodically to
insure that diseased horses are not allowed to mingle with healthy
horses.
Horse shows, organized trail rides or other events require a negative
Coggins test from all participants to insure the health and safety
of all.
