Equine Inventory Survey 2000
Many
of you may remember completing a survey about horse ownership
in New York
State. Results from
that survey
were released in the fall of 2001. The last survey was in 1988
and the comparison of data by industry leaders found there to
be “substantial
changes." The information collected measures the contribution
of equines to the economy of the state. Data collected included
information the number of animals by breed, use, location and
type of operation. Also, acreage for equine use, employment data,
equine
value and related expenses.
Of local interest, Erie County ranked second in the state with
7,200 horses reported. Niagara County ranked 20th out of 58 counties
with 3,000 horses reported. The number one county in the state
was Saratoga County with 11,800 head reported.
